Review: The Lucky One (Nicholas Sparks)

The Lucky One (Nicholas Sparks)Goodreads Summary: When U.S. Marine Logan Thibault finds a photograph of a smiling young woman half-buried in the dirt during his third tour of duty in Iraq, his first instinct is to toss it aside. Instead, he brings it back to the base for someone to claim, but when no one does, he finds himself always carrying the photo in his pocket. Soon Thibault experiences a sudden streak of luck—winning poker games and even surviving deadly combat that kills two of his closest buddies. Only his best friend, Victor, seems to have an explanation for his good fortune: the photograph—his lucky charm.

Back home in Colorado, Thibault can’t seem to get the photo—and the woman in it—out of his mind. Believing that she somehow holds the key to his destiny, he sets out on a journey across the country to find her, never expecting the strong but vulnerable woman he encounters in Hampton, North Carolina—Elizabeth, a divorced mother with a young son—to be the girl he’s been waiting his whole life to meet. Caught off guard by the attraction he feels, Thibault keeps the story of the photo, and his luck, a secret. As he and Elizabeth embark upon a passionate and all-consuming love affair, the secret he is keeping will soon threaten to tear them apart—destroying not only their love, but also their live.

My Thoughts: I have read this book in just two days. I could not stop reading because the story was written in a beautiful language as all other novels by Nicholas Sparks. What I like so much about his novels is that they do not all end with a happy ending as you would expect from a love story. The thing about his stories is that you never know until the end whether it will be a happy or an unhappy ending. I do not want to tell you the ending of this story but it lets you wait until the very end to figure it out! I have heard people saying that they do not like the fact that many stories written by Nicholas Sparks do not have a happy ending. I think that Message in a Bottle is probably the most famous one without a happy ending. I cannot say that I like having sad endings but the fact that I do not know what to expect in the beginning makes the whole story more interesting for me. His stories usually make me cry because he is able to touch my feelings in a way that only a few authors can. When a book makes me cry it can only be a good one. This book in particular completely grabbed my attention. I was sitting in a café today and after a while I realised that I did not know what was happening around me. I was so caught up in the story of the book that I just did not pay attention to the rest of the world and I consider that as a very good sign!

Coming to the story of the book, it describes a man who is searching for a woman who he only knows from a picture that he found during the time he was serving in the Iraq war. He doesn’t know anything else about her but since he found the photo, he considered it as his lucky charm that protects him at all times. Under normal circumstances, he would probably not believe in lucky charms or signs or anything else spiritual but in the situation of war he starts to believe in it. This shows that we, as people who have never experienced a war in our personal life, cannot even imagine what the experiences of war can do to a person. In extreme situations like that we might act completely different as we would under normal circumstances.

But it is not only the picture that is viewed as a sign by Thibault. At one point in the story he describes that the marine corps is based on a rule of three. Three man are a Fire team, three fire teams are a squad and three squads are a platoon. He also has been to the Iraq three times. This is why he believes that the three trees in the picture of the woman are a sign as well. Everything that happens to him seem to be some sort of signs that guide and lead him into the right direction and tell him what to do. Whether he finds his luck or not… I will leave that open and let you explore by yourself…

I can just say that The Lucky One is another brilliant story written by Nicholas Sparks and just lets me hope that he is going to write many many more stories like this!
