Review: A Christmas Carol (Charles Dickens)

A Christmas Carol (Charles Dickens)Goodreads Summary: A Christmas Carol is a Victorian morality tale of an old and bitter miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, who undergoes a profound experience of redemption over the course of a Christmas Eve night. If the experience doesn’t change Scrooge’s ways, he will end up walking the Earth forever being nothing but an invisible and lonely ghost, like his deceased friend Jacob Marley. Mr. Scrooge is a financier/moneychanger who has devoted his life to the accumulation of wealth. He holds anything other than money in contempt, including friendship, love, and the Christmas season.

My Thoughts: We all know the famous story A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and the three Christmas spirits. I just finished reading it again. It is such a short story but I always enjoy reading it again right before Christmas because it shows me what Christmas is really about. It is not about having the perfect party or the perfect dinner. It is simply about being with your friends and family – the people you love and who love you.

Scrooge doesn‘t have any friends or family because he is always really mean and rude to everyone. He treats everyone miserably and does not care about the feelings of others. He is only focused on himself and his own life and uses everybody else to get the best out of every situation for himself. But when the Christmas spirits appear, they are showing him what is really important in life. They demonstrate to him how lonely he is with nobody caring about him over Christmas and everyone just complaining about him. In the end he is even exposed to his own death and the reactions of others to his death.

I think this story is really important in order to understand the real meaning of friendships and family but in my opinion this is a general value and not a special one for Christmas. Of course, it is nice to remember these things, especially over Christmas but we shouldn‘t forget these values throughout the rest of the year. Christmas can be a good starting point to think about the past year and to reflect about it and then take these thoughts and realisations into the next year.

A Christmas Carol is a wonderful tale written in a beautiful language. It is an old story but it is still valid today. It made me think about relationships in general and made me value my own relationships even more than before.

I hope for everyone out there that you won‘t be alone this Christmas and have a fantastic time with your beloved.

My Rating: ★★★★
